The Palouse 2012
Palouse Falls to Steptoe Butte – May 18th-20th
Investment: $495 per person.
Sunrise: 5:27am
Sunset: 8:44pm
Our second workshop for 2012 will be a 3 day event held in the dreamlike hills of the Palouse in Eastern Washington during peak growth of Spring. Much of this time will be spent near Colfax, Washington on and around Steptoe Butte State Park.
The closest airport to the workshop is the Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport; however this is a small airport with only 1 airstrip. There is also an airport in Spokane, WA, about an hour from Colfax. The nearest major airports would be (PDX) Portland, Oregon and (SEA) in Seattle Washington. Each of these airports is approx 4.5 hours driving time to Colfax, Washington.
Here is a list of hotel accommodations closest to the event:
Best Western PLUS
Siesta Motel
Hotels can also be found in Pullman, 15 minutes drive east of Colfax.
Day One: We will begin this workshop at the very top of Steptoe Butte State Park at 5:00am. Steptoe Butte State Park is a 150 acre, 3,612 foot tall natural monument that looms over the rolling hills in the area. The window with the best quality of light lasts for approximately 2 hours just after sunrise and again just before sunset. During the rest of the day we will be exploring all of the abandoned buildings and old machinery that the area has to offer and much more! Because of the length of daylight during this time of the year, we will be taking a 2-3 hour break on the first two days of the workshop so that people can go back to their hotels to rest or take an extended lunch.
Day Two: Our second day will begin back up at Steptoe Butte for additional exploration of this picturesque area. The Palouse offers endless opportunity and everyone will want to go back more than once during the weekend. After our mid day break we will head over to the amazing Palouse Falls and photograph this area through the hours of sunset.
Day Three: We are leaving this day open as far as scheduling goes and will discuss as a group which areas we may like to revisit from the previous two days or go out exploring together as a group. We will wrap up the extended weekend at approximately 6:00pm, giving everyone an opportunity to head back to their respective destinations a little early.
Hotel accommodations, travel & food expenses and any fees related to entry to the areas we will be photographing are not covered as part of your investment fee.
Minimal hiking will be required of distances less than 1 mile at any given time during the workshop. If you have any concerns about your physical ability please contact us for more details. The majority of the trails we will be traveling are well maintained and highly traveled year round.

So…. what have you got against Spokane? Flying into Spokane is easy with lots of direct and connecting flights, and would save people at least 3 hours driving time from Seattle or Portland.
Nothing at all Ian. I did not know it was large enough to be an option. Thanks for letting me know.
We (my wife Diane & I) met you at the Top Notch last year. I really love your photographs of our beautiful area. If there is any way I can program the time away from school I hope to join you.
Do you have any feed back from your previous Palouse Workshops. I really want to take this workshop The one i was going to take was canceled.
Hi Cliff, Last year was our first Palouse workshop but also one of the most popular. I do not hand out or ask for specific formal feedback from our workshops but I can provide you flickr links to people who went with us last year if you would like to ask them how this or any of our workshops are. Can you send me your email address to aaroncreed@comcast.net?
Cliff: I agree with Destin. I went last year and it was wonderful. The Palouse is beautiful and we all came away with some great photos. Had a lot of fun and learned a lot. Hope you go.
Cliff: I would highly recomend the workshop. I went last year and it was great. I had seen an article that described the Palouse as one of the ten places (and the only one in the U.S.) that a landscape photographer must visit, so I knew I wanted to go. I knew Zeb from his excellent teaching, and Aaron from his amazing photography… and they did not disappoint. The group was great, the locations well scouted and beautiful, the days long but very fulfilling. I am happy to answer any questions you might have, but the long and the short is I give it my highest recommendation.
Thanks Destin!
Thanks Destin , I will be signing up. I just can’t wait
